Guédé

The Guédé are a family of funeral loa, or death spirits according to the Vodou religion, and act as psychopomps, or guardians of the souls and the place of rest; the cemetery. They love rum, hot peppers, and generally possess sexual mischievousness, and are known for being obscene, and rowdy. The family has numerous members, which can vary according to the faith of one Vodou tradition or area, to another. The most basic list is:

Baron La Croix – Baron of the Cross, and the ultimate symbol of suave, and handsome self-confidence. He has the philosophy that one should enjoy life, sex, and find the pleasures of existence regardless of monetary positions. He finds the reasons for death silly, and humorous, and is also called Baron Lakwa, spelled the same.
Baron Cimetière – Baron of the Cemetery, another counterpart or personality of Baron Samedi, he is known as the male guardian of the cemetery.
Baron Samedi – The chief Baron of the Ghede; the leader of the cemetery and funeral loa.
Maman Brigitte – The wife of Baron Samedi, and sometimes known as the mother of the Ghede/Guédé family. Symbolized by a black rooster, and is just as naughty as the rest.
Guédé Nibo – A psychopomp, who is the loa spirit of the young dead; he is depicted as a young, handsome man who died violently, and suddenly. He is the guardian of the tombs of those who died in their youth, particularly by murder.

Papa Ghede – Thought to be the more benevolent, and less troublesome counterpart of Baron Samedi; a more fatherly and warm figure, the one who waits at the crossroads, and administers to the health of children.
