Candomble

The Candomblé religion originated in Africa and Brazil, and is mainly only still practiced in Brazil and other surrounding countries. In the Candomblé religion, The Supreme Being, or God, has many names. Some of the names are: Eleda, Olodumare, Olofin-Orun, Olorun, and Eledumare. Along with God, the Candomblé believers worship the Orishás, who are referenced with Catholic Christian saints. Candomblé was originally confined to just the slaves of the population. It was also banned in Catholic churches, and some governments even considered it to be a crime. Despite all that, the religion survived for four-hundred years, and expanded in the 19th century after the abolishment of slavery.
Also in the 1800′s, the origional Candomblétemple, called terreiro, was built, and founded by three African women, who’s names were Iya Deta, Iya Kala, and Iya Nasso. However this didn’t last; The Candomblé people started to split because of disagreements, and forming new candombles and mixing ideas from other religions from other cultures. Some of the Candomblé rituals may include the sacrificing of animals, ceremonial dancing and drumming, healing practices, and possession of participants. The Candomblé people belived that every person was born with a specific “patron” deity. All of the deities, except for The Supreme Being, would possess Candomblé priests and communicate to the people through the priest’s bodies. They would communicate and dance with all of the human beings that attended the ceremony.
In most Candomblé nations/countries, most of the deities have similar traits, and are similar in many other ways. For example, all of the deities from different nations that are hunters all wear the same colors. However similar they may be, they are still considered to be completely different deities. Also, deities from a certain nation can visit other nations; the nation that they visit can give them a new name, or not give them a name at all. They can also give that deity the name from the origins of the original religion of Candomblé.
